The world emphasizes our differences, but God’s love is one of acceptance. We invite you to be part of our family at Asbury.
Who is Asbury?
Our
Mission, Motto, Ministry, Family
Worship with us every Sunday 11:30am
Asbury is a UM Welcoming Congregation!
Our The people of Asbury are called to share God’s love as we minister with and to all persons in the community where the church is located, and beyond, providing worship, nurture, fellowship, and service. Our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, economic conditions, physical or mental ability. We embrace and seek to preserve the beautiful, amazing diversity of God’s creation. We cooperate in ministry with other local churches and groups of God’s people as we participate in the worldwide mission of Christ.
“An open heart is one that loves all people, even if they are different, even if they have hurt us. An open mind is one that listens to new ideas and ways of thinking about things. It never says, ‘I am right and I don't need to hear any other viewpoint.’ An open door is just that--open. It isn't open only to people like us. It isn't open part way so we can peek out and assess people's worthiness before we let them in.” This is how Rev. Eileen Dumire, Asbury’s pastor, describes Asbury’s interpretation of the United Methodist motto of open hearts, open minds, and open doors.
Worship,
study, fellowship:
Asbury worships, sings, prays and
studies together.
Asbury fellowships together with
covered dish dinners, candy kisses Bingo, holiday
parties, the annual Celebration of Diversity, Mardi Gras party, spaghetti dinners and eating out.
Asbury is a family whose goal is to love God and share that love with others.
Asbury participates in various
ecumenical services such as
“Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your
strength..Love your neighbor as yourself.”(Mark 12:30-31)
Outreach:
Asbury reaches out into our East End
neighborhood by having sidewalk Sunday School with singing, Bible stories,
puppet shows, and refreshments; outdoor services followed by a cookout; block parties
with games, food and entertainment; and Christmas caroling with a gift-giving
Santa.
Asbury actively seeks to be totally inclusive of all
people regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender,
economic conditions, physical or mental ability, or sexual orientation.
Asbury is a SHARE site, an outreach
food program that helps people buy groceries at ˝ the price.
“Go into all the world and
preach the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15)

Stewardship:
Asbury gives of its time, talents,
prayers and gifts to support the following organizations: Health Right, Covenant House, Charleston AIDS
Network, Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, Religious Coalition for Community
Renewal, Community Development Outreach Ministries,
Asbury participates in Methodist
Federation of Social Action, annual Martin Luther King Celebration, the Pride
Parade, and the Interdenominational Council for Social Concerns, and East End
Community Association.
Asbury makes a conscious effort to
rent our building space to organizations that share our
environmental and social concerns.
“…and what does the Lord
require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your
God.” (Micah 6:8)
Our Family
Asbury is
a group of sharing individuals who come together in worship to share their differences, talents, souls and spiritual
convictions. A group of caring individuals who gather together to work on
a neighborhood project and join hands at an AIDS candlelight service, to pray
for those going through difficult times. A group of daring individuals who
challenge one another to grow in their individual
relationship with God, stand up against social injustices, and walk
beside each other in the state Pride Parade.
“Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7:20)
