Crucifixion
of Jesus ( Matthew 27:35-50 ) {Back
to Passages}
35: And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots:
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted
my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36: And sitting down they watched him there;
37: And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38: Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right
hand, and another on the left.
39: And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40: And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in
three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the
cross.
41: Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and
elders, said,
42: He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel,
let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43: He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him:
for he said, I am the Son of God.
44: The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same
in his teeth.
45: Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto
the ninth hour.
46: And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
47: Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This
man calleth for Elias.
48: And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled
it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49: The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save
him.
50: Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the
ghost.
Crucifixion of
Jesus ( Mark 15:24-37 ) {Back
to Passages}
24: And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting
lots upon them, what every man should take.
25: And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
26: And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE
KING OF THE JEWS.
27: And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand,
and the other on his left.
28: And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered
with the transgressors.
29: And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and
saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,
30: Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
31: Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with
the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
32: Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that
we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
33: And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole
land until the ninth hour.
34: And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi,
Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken me?
35: And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold,
he calleth Elias.
36: And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on
a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias
will come to take him down.
37: And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
Crucifixion of
Jesus ( Luke 23:32-46 ) {Back
to Passages}
32: And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be
put to death.
33: And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary,
there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and
the other on the left.
34: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they
do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
35: And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided
him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the
chosen of God.
36: And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him
vinegar,
37: And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38: And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek,
and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39: And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying,
If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40: But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear
God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41: And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds:
but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42: And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into
thy kingdom.
43: And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou
be with me in paradise.
44: And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over
all the earth until the ninth hour.
45: And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in
the midst.
46: And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into
thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Crucifixion of
Jesus ( John 19:18-30 ) {Back
to Passages}
18: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side
one, and Jesus in the midst.
19: And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing
was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20: This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus
was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek,
and Latin.
21: Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The
King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22: Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23: Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments,
and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the
coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24: They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast
lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled,
which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they
did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25: Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26: When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing
by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27: Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that
hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28: After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,
that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29: Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge
with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30: When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:
and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Death of Jesus
( Matthew 27:57-61 ) {Back
to Passages}
57: When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named
Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded
the body to be delivered.
59: And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen
cloth,
60: And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock:
and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61: And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over
against the sepulchre.
Death of Jesus
( Mark 15:42-47 ) {Back
to Passages}
42: And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation,
that is, the day before the sabbath,
43: Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited
for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved
the body of Jesus.
44: And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto
him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
45: And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
46: And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in
the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and
rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.
47: And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he
was laid.
Death of Jesus
( Luke 23:50-56 ) {Back
to Passages}
50: And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he
was a good man, and a just:
51: (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he
was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the
kingdom of God.
52: This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
53: And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a
sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
54: And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
55: And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed
after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
56: And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested
the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Death of Jesus
( John 19:38-42 ) {Back
to Passages}
38: And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus,
but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away
the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took
the body of Jesus.
39: And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus
by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound
weight.
40: Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes
with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41: Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and
in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42: There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation
day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
