What is the Middle Ages Fellowship?
What
began as a fun day to the New York Renaissance Faire has blossomed into
a group of people that have come together to show that church can have
a fun side. The members of the group range in age from 4 months and
up. It is a group for singles, couples and families. We recreate
16th century Renaissance England, through our costumes, props, decorations
and our various talents. We meet each week to review and learn new
dances of the period. There is baby-sitting available each meeting
from 7 to 9 p.m.
What is the purpose or goal of the group?
Our goal is to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to share in light-hearted Christian fellowship while assisting the ministry of the church.
Proceeds earned throughout the year are distributed
to mission outreach projects, Trustee projects and other Asbury United
Methodist Church needs not covered by the general church budget.
Our biggest project is our annual Faire in June.
Do you have to belong to the church to be a member?
Membership at Asbury or any other church has never been or will ever be a requirement to join the group. There are not even any dues that have to be paid!
What is the Renaissance period about?
The Renaissance time period began on the European Continent in the late 15th century. It was a time of cultural renewal. Italy became the birthplace of this period. It was there that scholars first attempted to put those who lived in that century back in touch with the works of those who preceded them. Art and refinement were becoming an important part of court life in France, Spain and Italy. It was fast becoming the rage to seek out a master scholar to learn as much as possible from him. It was becoming no longer acceptable for a member of court to be unschooled. England was slow to pick up on this Renaissance rage and it wasn't until King Henry VIII that scholars even wanted to go to England. As bad as his reputation has been painted, Henry did much to make England the power it was in that century. King Henry made it well worth their while to come to England and during his lifetime England was the place to be much to the chagrin of France and Spain.
What does the group do?
As stated above, the two biggest events that this group sponsors are the annual "Renaissance Faire at Asbury Court" on the second Saturday of each June.
So, of you enjoy relaxing after a long hectic week,
meeting other people and being in fellowship with people of all ages, this
is the place to be.
