BEING A CHRISTIAN
Being a Christian means having a mind through which Christ can think. It means having a face which can reflect his glory. It means having eyes through which he can see. It means having hands by which he can lift up and having a heart out of which his love can flow. It means having bodies which, when united with other bodies, become the strength of the Body of Christ to continue his ministry until the whole world is saved. Being a Christian means we have a Person who has loved us and who lives within us, whose love we seek to express. It means having a foundation on which to stand, and a life for which a vision has already been given.
I confess to you, as I am sure some of you would confess, that I do not do that as well as I should. I do not do it as well as I know how. So, what I need is encouragement. I know, as Paul said, “I have done some things I ought not to have done., and I have left undone things I ought to have done, “but I also believe this, and so I identify with Paul when he said, “I press on to make it my own be cause Christ Jesus has made me his own.”
Imagine, if you would, a great Christian convention. the hotel lobby is crowded with people who are wearing badges telling who they are and from whence they came, and from what church they come as representatives or delegates. There are displays all around the lobby telling what Christians believe. There are pictures showing what Christians do. there is a diagram laying out all the problems of the world and the committees of the convention which are going to solve those problems. There is a giant banner across the entrance to the hotel, and there is another giant banner in the convention room inside the hotel that says, “Let’s Win the World for Jesus Christ Today”. The enthusiasm, the excitement, the joy of the people is so loud that it is almost deafening. Over in the corner, there is a woman sitting with her head in her hands. She is crying, and no one seems to notice.
Into the lobby walks a man who obviously is not dressed to be a part of that convention. I do not know how Christians are supposed to dress, but we know when they show up and they are not dressed right, do we not? He does not wear a badge, he is a stranger; but he sees the woman crying. He goes over and talks to her, and soon her tears are gone and her face reflects that she has been comforted, and the stranger goes his way.
Jesus would say, “Who would you say was the neighbor?” And I would say, “Who is the one most like Him?” Is it those who were talking about it, excited about theology and doctrine and church and evangelism and mission or is it the one who showed compassion? Now, both of them are needed, but being Christian always begins with showing love. For Jesus said, “By this shall all know that you are mine, by the way you love one another”
Who, then, is a Christian? Are you? Not only Christ, nor I, but the world waits for your answer.
