PSALM 23
An orator was preparing to make a presentation and decided he would do something well-known for the audience. He decided to quote the Twenty-third Psalm. When he had finished, the audience applauded approvingly of the eloquent manner in which he had read this familiar piece of scripture.
When the applause had settled, he looked over and saw in the wings of the stage, an old gentleman, a custodian, leaning on a broom. He said to the old gentleman, “Do you know the Twenty-third Psalm?” The man nodded that he did. He said, “Why don’t you come out here and say it?” The old gentleman came to the center of the stage and began to say, “The Lord in my shepherd …” When he finished, there was silence throughout the auditorium. The orator came back to center stage and said, “The difference is, I know the Psalm, he knows the Shepherd.”
Knowing the Lord as Shepherd, knowing that we are known by Him, and that we are cared for by Him, that we are led and guided and saved by Him, gives us comfort and strength. The great assurance of this psalm, so precious and encouraging to us in our faith, is the constant assurance that, in the journey of life, God is always with us as God has promised. He did not simply create us and go back to His heaven to see how we would make it in the journeys of our days. He is with us to lead and guide and to bless us, and ultimately to take us home. It is a word of inspiration to those who know the Lord as Shepherd, who recognize His voice, and who are willing to be guided by His word. For He is the one who will lead us in the paths that lead to eternal life and joy.
The Shepherd is willing to say, “my sheep.” Are you willing to say, “The Lord is my shepherd?” I can tell you this. You will find no better guide or closer friend than when you say, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
Pastor Don Foster
