IT’S AN HONOR TO SERVE

I am impressed by the military personnel now serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. When asked in interviews I have been about their attitude, they respond, “It is an honor to serve.”

What they are saying is that it is an honor to serve for us, in our behalf in the cause of freedom, peace, justice and world order. they consider it a privilege, a matter of esteem, of dignity, integrity and commitment. I will not forget, and I hope you will not forget, those who said, “It is an honor to serve.”

In Hebrews 12: 1-6 we read: “since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy (the honor) that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

By his life and by his teachings, Jesus demonstrated that he considered it an honor to be able to serve God by serving you and me in the cause of freedom, justice and salvation. Consider the willingness of our Lord to lead a life of love and kindness, compassion and grace, which ended with a cross which he did not deserve, but he went to it without complaining, crying or cursing. Some of the last words on his lips were words of prayer for our freedom, freedom from sin and freedom from death. This was the Son of God, who considered it an honor, a matter of esteem, dignity and commitment to give his last ounce of devotion that you might be free. How do you feel about that?

Imagine with me what a difference it would make in your life, in your church, in your community, and in the world if, like those who are going to war knowing that it may mean death, those of us who are committed to life could catch that same spirit and believe it is an honor to serve in the causes of life and goodness in the world.

I cannot tell you what an honor it is for me to have the privilege and the freedom to read the scripture, to pray, to preach the gospel and preside over the table, remembering what has been done for us, and calling us to renew our commitment to what we can do for others. Truly the greatest honor of my life is that God has called me to share his love. How do you feel? How will you respond when your call comes? Is it an honor to serve?

Pastor Don Foster

FINANCE COMMITTEE

The Finance Committee wishes to report to the congregation that 2008 was a good year for the finances of the Arma United Methodist Church.

2008 Budget $46,980.12

2008 receipts for budgeted dollars $43,167.30

Items to note about the 2008 budget – there are some budgeted items that were paid for personally by several individuals. When donated this way, the funds do not flow through the checking account. Also note that some items are included in the budget, but the need to purchase these items did not arise in 2008. We would also note that all bills for 2008 have paid. The Finance Committee appreciates your support of the mission of the Arma United Methodist Church. We would particularly at this time express appreciation to all those who donated so generously to the Christmas offering.

The budget for 2009 totals $50,882.00. The increase is do to increases in costs that we do not control. To meet the 2009 budget, a weekly offering of $978.50 is needed. The total receipts for budgeted dollars do include all funds received from fundraisers.
