WHAT KIND OF VOTE WOULD JESUS GET?
I want you to imagine with me that you are living in the springtime of the first century and not in Southeast Kansas, but in the city of Jerusalem, the capitol of Israel. I would like you to suppose with me that you had not heard all of the stories and simply listen to me as I comment on the news – a decision being made concerning leadership.
What kind of vote do you think Jesus will get on November 4? The report from the northern district is that he is a very popular person. He has been talking to large crowds of people, and he has given hope to those who are discouraged. He has given the promise of peace of mind to those who are possessed, and he has offered healing to people of various diseases. it is said he has provided food for the multitudes on two occasions, and he had so much food that there was some left over, which is an indication of his concern for the hungry and poor. It is said that he takes the babies in his arms and blesses them. It is also reported that wherever he is asked to go, and whatever he is asked to do, he is willing to go and do what he can to be helpful.
When the news goes out that he is about to enter another village or town, it is said the people are so eager to experience his great spirit that they actually go out to meet him. It seems he has time for anyone and everyone. He has compassion for people, whether they are rich or poor, sick or healthy, young or old, influential or powerless, pious or a sinner. He cares about people. It is said that he has performed many miracles.
In spite of his power, his wisdom, his influence, he appears to be so humble. Instead of riding a white stallion of triumph as a conqueror who is coming into the capitol to claim the city, he comes riding on a donkey to symbolize that he has come into the world to serve humanity. It is quite a sight! It is an interesting and powerful rally. What do you think his chances are?
I stop the report with that because you already know the rest of the story. You already know what kind of vote he got. He was not made a king, instead he was betrayed by one of his best friends. He was arrested and put through the mockery of a trial. He was denied. He was whipped within an inch of his life. He was scorned, cursed, humiliated and spat upon. He was crucified, and when he was dead he had to be buried in a borrowed grave because everyone had deserted Him.
On Sunday we gather to say with the crowd “crown him” but what about Tuesday? As much as I would prefer to believe and hope that I would have stood, and would still stand with the Sunday crowd and shout “crown him! He’s king.” I am honest enough to admit often by Tuesday or Thursday in my own selfishness somehow that loyalty slips and I would rather he not be as close to me then as he is on Sundays. Does that every happen to you? I also know he deserves better than that. I encourage you, then, to join with me in renewing our vote of confidence in Christ as the only one who deserves to rule over us. You have only one vote, but you have one vote. What kind of vote will Jesus get?
Pastor Don Foster
