HE GAVE US HIS WORD

What is the Word of God?  In the New Testament, it is a term used for Christ, who is the incarnation of what God was trying to say, and wanting to say to humanity, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.

At its deepest level, the Word of God is a claim that God is seeking to communicate with us.  We can come to know God in terms of His person and his purpose, His judgment, His will, His desire, His grace and mercy, His being and that becomes for us the Word of God because there is a connection, there is a communication.  We have received it, God has given it.  We know God and God knows us.

There is no way in which I could ever be free to stand in the pulpit simply to share with you a few of my good, religious ideas.  It is not the oratorical style, nor the emotions with which I express the Word that makes the difference.  It is that God has called me to preach, to speak for God, and I believe that the same spirit which confirms that calling in me, and gives me the message God wants me to share with you, is at work in your life.  It is the same spirit at work in you to receive what God is trying to say to you.  When it happens, what you remembers are not simply the words I am speaking in my sermon.  What you remember is that somehow you felt personally addressed.  In fact, many of you say to me from time to time, “I felt as though you were talking straight to me today.”  I would invite you to consider the possibility that it is God speaking to you the word of encouragement, salvation, hope, challenge, judgment, love, and when that happens, that for you is the Word of God.

The Bible deals with eternal truths.  You can read the stories in the morning newspaper and despair, but when you read in the scripture the words like David’s, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for Thou art with me …” or the words of Paul, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”  “there is a peace which passes understanding,” you find hope and encouragement, light and life, and you have heard the Word of God.

The important thing is not that you know the Book, but that you know God, and that is what we are about.  Listen, then, God is speaking to you right now.  God has given us His word and His word is, “I won’t ever leave you.  I will be with you.  I love you.”  Listen for God’s word, and get to know God as the greatest possibility in life I really believe that.
