PASTOR’S CORNER
KINDNESS IS
CONTAGIOUS -- TRY IT!
The two critical questions in every
major religion are, “What does God have to offer you?,” and “What does God
require of you?’ For us Christians, the
answer to the first question is given in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The answer to the second is given by the
prophet Mical, who said, “He has showed you, Oh Man, what is good and what does
the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly
with your God.”
It is so simple. It is so easy. Yet we make it so difficult. Kindness is contagious. “Do justice.
Love kindness,” embrace it, and express it, “and walk humbly with your
God.” What better way can we express who
we are, and what we believe our life is to be all about.
Kindness is contagious. I learned that as a child from my
mother. She taught me that if you will
be kind and respectful, and thoughtful of other people, they will be that to you
in return. Sometimes I have not been,
but for the most part it has been a truth that has upheld my life. The writer of Proverbs might well have been
writing about my mother when he said, “she opens her mouth with wisdom and the
teachings of kindness are always on her tongue,” because she was always talking
about how important it is to love people.
Claim God’s love and show it. We have the power to change the world. That is what I believe. Kindness is contagious. Try it.
Don Foster, Pastor

FOCUS ON OUR
MEMBERS/FRIENDS--
This month we would like to feature
Flora Scherff. Flora’s membership in the
AUMC spans several decades -- since 1924.
She served as a Sunday School teacher and our organist since the
1920s. Flora worked her entire lifetime
as a beautician, and once cut an airline stewardess’ hair at 30,000 feet. She is now living in Topeka with her daughter,
Judy, on a street named after her.
Flora’s birthday is February 10th.
Here’s her address for cards:
2640 SE Flora Ct., Topeka, KS
66605.
Happy Birthday, Flora!!
UMW
The January UMW meeting was
cancelled due to inclement weather. The
February 14th meeting will be at 11:15 am at the church to go for lunch with
the meeting to follow. The unit will be
sponsoring a Super Bowl soup sale, Sunday, February 5th, following church
service. A variety of homemade soups
will be offered on a carryout basis.
UMW Cookbook
We need your recipes!! To have a good, saleable cookbook, we need at
least 200 recipes, preferably more.
Extra copies of the recipe collection forms are available on the table in
the Narthex of the church. The table
holds a box for you to deposit your recipes.
Our target is to have the recipe
books for sale at the Homecoming Dinner.
That means we probably should have the recipes to the publisher sometime
in April.
The sooner we have 200 or more
recipes, the sooner we will have a recipe book. Forms also may be returned to Marlene Singel
or any UMW member.
LEAVE THE COOKING TO

Stewardship Corner
-- “Stewardship is enumerating the ways in which God has blessed you, then
asking yourself how you might respond.
This is so important, I’m going to say it again: Stewardship is enumerating the ways in which
God has blessed you, and then asking yourself how you might respond.”
“Begin with the fact that God
allowed his only begotton and dearly beloved Son to die on the cross so you and
I might have life in all its fullness.
Move on to home and food, clothing and work, family and friends, and we
soon find that virtually all that is good about life is a gift from God. Then we need to ask, ‘What would be an
appropriate measure of my response to God’s goodness?’ That’s stewardship. Anything less is a matter of parking on
someone else’s nicke.”
Congratulations to --
RACHEL CAMERON for Honor Roll and to RACHEL CAMERON and JACOB PRICE for recent
successes in NEHS Scholars’ Bowl activities.
