In January 1851, the Ansonia Methodist Society was organized with 61 members. The first church building was on Main and Bridge Streets and was occupied until 1865. As the membership increased, a larger building was needed. A new church on Main Street, opposite Maple Street, was dedicated in 1866 with 114 members.

In 1943, the church burned to the ground and the congregation joined with the Swedish M.E. Church. The next year, the Holbrook and Franklin Street property was purchased and our present church was dedicated on November 4, 1951.

In the 1960s the stained glass windows on the north and south walls were added and dedicated in honor and memory of loved ones. The Rose window depicting John Wesley preaching in a village in Cornwall, England, and the Moeller pipe organ were also dedicated. In 1969, our name was legally changed to the First United Methodist Church of Ansonia. We have since added a new sound system and a Maas-Rowe Carillon.

Celebrations were held for our 25th and 40th anniversaries, the latter in 1991 where 91 members who had continuous membership were honored with 34 of those members present. A 50-year anniversary celebration for the church was held in October 2001, along with the celebration of 150 years of Methodism in Ansonia.
