Our Mission

We, the United Methodist Church of Anacortes, are striving to create and build an understand- ing, healthy and accepting church family that is diverse and inclusive, teaches the Gospel of Christ, and is filled with the love and Grace of God. Our aim is to reach out with hospitality to our church family and to the community.

Our Shared Values

As we live out our Mission Statement together, these are the ideals we value:

~ Worship as a joyous, spiritual celebration of praise that also centers, renews and nourishes    us in our ongoing journey.

~ The presence of the Holy Spirit as we seek God's love and guidance.

~ A variety of music that engages our spirits, expresses our feelings, and reflects the diversity    of our spiritual needs.

~ Providing opportunities that support spiritual and personal growth that equip us to be em-    powered disciples of Jesus Christ.

~ The ministry of each individual: encouraging shared and diverse leadership and participa-    tion by utilizing the variety of gifts and skills found in the church family.

~ Reaching out to enrich and become an integral part of the community, serving as a spiritual    resource, and welcoming all people with hospitality.

~ The fellowship and support of all ages in our church family: playing, working, praying, and    living together in God's word.

~ Providing specific opportunities for young families, children and youth to be supported, en-    couraged and nurtured in our community of faith.

~ Being responsive to diverse needs, appreciating the blessings that each person brings, and    sharing with them the love and acceptance of God.

~ Our facility as a warm, peaceful, inspiring and inviting church home in which to expand our    ministries and reflect the glory of God.

Our History

Our first worship service as the First Methodist Episcopal Church was held in a canvas-covered tent on land donated by Amos Bowman, founder of the town of Anacortes. Construction of a permanent facility on 8th Street between R and Q Avenues began that same year during the "Anacortes Boom", but owing to the "Bust" which followed, it was not completed until 1902.

The church became a center for educational and cultural events as the congregation took its place in community life. Then, in 1965 our present home at 22nd and H Avenues was dedi- cated, followed in 2001 by a magnificent addition. We rejoice in recognizing our facility as a warm, peaceful, inspiring and inviting church home in which to expand our ministries and reflect the glory of God,
