Aldersgate in the Community

For nearly 30 years, the Crisis Room ministry has been and remains one of Aldersgate's most visible and effective programs of outreach and christian service to the Central New Jersey community.

While celebrating the Crisis Room's direct and personal outreach in providing food, clothing and financial help to literally thousands of people over the years, there are many other ways in which the people of Aldersgate serve the community. To list just a few:

  • The United Methodist Women sponsor an 'Angel Tree' program to provide Christmas gifts coupled with Christ's love, for dozens of disadvantaged children each year.

  • Aldersgate members support the annual CROP walk - with both their pledges and their shoe leather - to raise funds for the needy in the community and the wider world.
Click here for information on CROP and Church World Service.

The East Brunswick CROP Walk for 2007 was held on Sunday, October 21. As well as the Church World Service organization, some part of these contributions are also given to Aldersgate's Crisis Room to feed the hungry in our own community. Shown here are some of the Aldersgate walkers who turned out for this event. SomeAldersgateWalkers

  • The Methodist Men join with members of the New Brunswick United Methodist Church each year in staffing homeless shelter services at NBUMC during midwinter.

Our most recent service was in March of 2008. The next opportunity will be at the Christmas season of 2008

Crisis Room

The Crisis Room Ministry at Aldersgate was begun over 30 years ago by one of Aldersgate's charter members, Fran Mickett. Fran started the Crisis Room in response to clothing and food needs of many people in the area. As this ministry developed, she enlisted the help of the Aldersgate United Methodist Women. The Crisis Room remained with the UMW until about 2000, when it became a separate ministry of the church.

Families from the Middlesex County area can get food, clothing and financial assistance from the Crisis Room. We provide food and clothing assistance with no questions asked. Social service agencies in the area recommend families who need financial help.

Clothing and food are donated by church families and other churches, organizations and individuals throughout the year. We receive funding from Aldersgate, Trinity Presbyterian Church, from some of the proceeds of the CROP Walk, from private donations, and a few small grants.

Diane Hutchins is the Crisis Room Coordinator now, as Fran has taken a well-deserved retirement from the position. We also have a committed group of women who meet early on Monday mornings to sort clothes for the weekly clothing distribution which takes place at 9:00am. Finally, we have a food coordinator, Paul Roder, who handles all food requests.

Our Hotline for assistance, as indicated below, is 732-257-9920 and can be reached 24 hours per day. In addition, we are always happy to RECEIVE additional donations, and we also welcome volunteers to help out in this ministry.

What We Need

Remember, if you have been blessed and are in a position to give rather than to receive from the Crisis Room, we desperately need donations of food. In particular, we need the following items: canned meats, tuna fish, canned pastas, cereal, spaghetti, peanut butter and jelly. If you do not find it easy to shop for these items, a monetary donation will also help us to buy food for those in need.

We also need volunteers - we need volunteers for Monday mornings, to help sort and distribute clothing and food - we also need volunteers at other times to return calls, make appointments and meet clients who need food. Please contact our coordinator, Diane Hutchins, if you can volunteer on either a short-term or a long-term basis.
