Aldersgate's History

On May 24, 1991, the Reverend Dr. Dick Jenkins met with a small group of interested people at Walnut Hill United Methodist Church in Dallas to share together a dream to build a new United Methodist Church in north Carrollton. Out of that meeting, several themes and visions were generated from the group discussion.

One theme for this new congregation became "A Kaleidoscope of Dreams". They wanted to be a congregation that would attract a variety of persons who, through their rich and dynamic diversity, would come together in a wonderful mix of creative ministry for Jesus Christ.

Another important vision for this church was to become "A Gateway to New Beginnings". The Christian faith is a faith of forgiveness and new life. It is the prayer of this congregation that we may always be open to the Holy Spirit for spiritual renewal and new opportunities to live out our faith in fresh and vital ways.

Aldersgate began holding services at E.L. Kent Elementary School in October of 1991 and was consecrated as a new congregation of the United Methodist Church on May 24, 1992 with 91 members. Dr. Jenkins served as the pastor of the church from its beginning until June, 1994.

Dr. Victor Casad was appointed pastor in June 1994. The Aldersgate held its first worship service in its new building on Old Denton Road on March 24, 1996.

Pastor Woody Weilage was appointed pastor in June of 2002. Membership has grown to over 400.

Our congregation is designing a new church building which will be built next to the present facility.  We plan to be worshipping in our new facility by August of 2008.

What Does Aldersgate Mean?

May 24 is a very significant date in the history of the Methodist Church. It was on this date in 1738 when the Methodist movement and ultimately the Methodist Church received its spiritual beginning within the life of its founder, John Wesley. Wesley was an Anglican minister and college professor. Even though he was quite knowledgeable about the Christian religion he had yet to experience, in full measure, the Christian faith. After several months of inner turmoil regarding his spiritual condition, he wrote in his journal on May 24, 1738...

John Wesley
"In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther's preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ. I felt my heart strangely warmed, I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

Much of Aldersgate United Methodist Church's understanding of itself as a congregation is to be a church that is open to the power of the Holy Spirit to change hearts and lives through the amazing love of God in Jesus Christ.
