English as a Second Language (ESL)

Vision of Our Future
Alameda Heights United Methodist Church is offering a program to teach and tutor
English as a Second Language to our neighboring Hispanic and Asian communities.
Our previous pastor, Rev. Joyce Snapp, is helping Patricia, one of our ESL students, to learn
English.

Speaking as Friends
|
|
We at
Alameda Heights United Methodist Church see offering English classes to our neighbors as
one of the best ways that we can use our strengths in our particular location to do what
Christ would have us do -- welcome the strangers in our midst and help them find life more
abundant and joy more complete. |

Our Vision
|
|
We have
shared our vision with churches and agencies in the area. Mi Casa, ten blocks north
of us, encouraged us to go ahead with our efforts and referred us to the Justice
Information Center for technical help.
The Justice Information Center supported our plan and had our brochures translated into
Spanish and Vietnamese at no cost to us. Denver Public Schools told us they would allow us
to distribute our brochures through the local schools. Community leaders are in
agreement that there is an urgent need for this service.
In a guest editorial in the Denver Post in June 1997 Sean McAllister, ACLU Human Rights
Fellow studying law at UC Boulder, stated that a "major obstacle for immigrants
wanting to naturalize is that there is a 3,000 person waiting list in the Denver area to
get into English language classes." |
