| Smaller churches can take heart that God has special love for those things that are small. The New Testament parables of the mustard seed, the widow's mite, the lost sheep, and the lost coin all illustrate that faithfulness does not depend on large numbers. While small size does not guarantee legitimacy, neither shall small be a criterion for negative judgements. The writer of Deuteronomy says: "It was not because you were more numerous than any other people that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you -- for you were the fewest of all peoples.
