Wartrace United Methodist Church
The first recorded deed to the Wartrace Methodist Episcopal Church South in
Bedford County, TN. was dated March 25, 1872, entitled "S. R. Hailey to M.
T. Griswood and others." Trustees were M. T. Griswood, T. W. Tarpley, Thomas
Hart, N. C. Harris and D. B. Shriver. This first church building was a
wooden structure, replaced shortly by the present brick church. The steeple,
which became in disrepair, was removed around 1908. Two large Sunday school
rooms were built in 1925. In October of 1954, the "Allen Educational Annex",
was built comprising four new Sunday school rooms and full sized basement
with all modern conveniences and a new fellowship hall. In the early 1970's
a new addition was added which now contains the nursery and the church
office. A new parsonage was built in 1961 around the corner from the church
building on Simms Avenue.
From this Church have gone out in Christian vocations the Rev. Charles
Parker, Rev. Berthel Parker, Rev. Carl Parker, Rev. William (Bill) Niles,
Rev. Robert (Bob) Niles, David Spencer and three Missionary's Mary Jane
Miller, Bill and Willie Simmons.
A more in-depth history of the church can be found in the History of
Wartrace United Methodist Church.
