Our Purpose and VisionUnalaska United Methodist Church will be: A Family of Faith open and welcoming to all, Committed to making disciples for Jesus Christ, by Passionately reaching out to all of God’s People “Serving Unalaska and the Greater Aleutian community in the name of Christ” Every congregation is in the mission field. As people covenanted with Christ to be disciples and make disciples, we are not just called, but compelled to actively seek our responsibility in the community we live, and the world beyond. For Unalaska United Methodist, the sense of being in the mission field should be more acute, perhaps, than many other congregations. We are called to make disciples in a community that is largely unchurched, and desperately in need of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our mission must be to welcome people, help them grow in Christ, and finally send them out to be about the work of the body of Christ. While being a Family of Faith, we need to be conscious how we are welcoming others – through our ministries, presence in the community, and personal contacts. Intentional effort must be made to make sure people feel ‘at home’ when they step in our doors. Our physical structure, in its appearance and accessibility, our worship, with our bulletins and leadership, and our ministries should be conscious about varying needs of those who come. In our commitment to making disciples, we are working to transform lives. Recognizing its power to transform, every opportunity should be given for study of Scripture, both for those who are already with us, and as an outreach tool to the fishing industry, and others in the community. As those called to ‘go and make disciples,’ Scripture ought to guide us in our decision making as a congregation, in our goal setting, and in our functioning as a community. Finally, in our passionately reaching out for God’s people, we need to first recognize that every person is sought after by God, and offered grace in Jesus Christ. There is an opportunity in every encounter to see God’s face, and allow the Spirit to give wisdom in introducing individuals to amazing grace. We need to be passionate about seeing each person with the eyes of Christ, and seeking opportunities to invite them into that relationship. |
