Where in the world is Unalaska?
Unalaska is a village located on Unalaska
Island, a part of a group of islands in the
Aleutian Archipelago known as the Fox Islands.
Unalaska Island is often referred to as “the Rock”, and a place
“at the end of the world.” In fact Unalaska Island is near the beginning
of the Aleutian Archipelago, a curving sweep of volcanic islands in the
northern Pacific Rim. There is an active volcano on Unalaska Island,
Makushin Volcano, which can be seen from the village on a clear day.
The exact location of Unalaska is between latitudes 55¾ 15’ and
54¾ N and between longitudes 166¾ and 168¾W.
The Aleutian Archipelago stretches in an arch, 1,000 miles, from
North America to Asia. Unalaska Island is 800 miles from Anchorage, and
the island is closer to Asia than Washington State. The incorporated
community of Unalaska is comprised of two islands, Amaknak Island on
which Dutch Harbor and the airport are located, and Unalaska Island. A
bridge known as “The Bridge to the Other Side” connects the two.
Unalaska Island is approximately 90 miles long, 35 miles across at its
widest section, and is the second largest island in the Aleutians. Amaknak Island is small by comparison and is located in Unalaska Bay.
