MISSION STATEMENT

We will continue to spread and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the mandate set down for the Church in Matthew 28:19-20. We will strive to be the best possible witnesses and incarnations of God's redeeming love, as we can possibly be. We will encourage and empower the members to be caring and loving individuals, as we look at the multitude of ways we can grow with integrity, ready to meet the needs of the seekers in our neighborhood. The mission can only be accomplished through prayer, education and the grace of God as exemplified through and in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Park Avenue congregation is a fellowship of caring, committed, and compassionate persons united together in Christ Jesus our Lord. All persons are welcome to be a part of this church community.

We not only welcome visitors, we EXPECT them.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

Park Avenue United Methodist Church is committed to the task of providing the best Christian Education program that is possible. Many dedicated volunteers serve in the educational process of the church. Several classes serve to meet the educational needs, nursery through adults. We have 2 adult classes; 1 nursery class for infants and toddlers, graded classes K-2, 3-5, and 6-12. All classes meet from 9:30 - 10:15, and follow the International Lesson series from the Methodist curriculum, or the David C. Cook curriculum in some of the children's classes, or various discussion topics of the adult classes' choosing.

We welcome and encourage all members and visitors to become active participants in this program of education and fellowship. Yes, we can always use willing volunteers in the Sunday School! If you come as a visitor, just join us on the main floor in the Fellowship Hall and someone will direct you to a whatever age level class you need!

NURSERY

A nursery service is provided for both infants and toddlers during Sunday School and worship each Sunday throughout the year and at most of the other special programs scheduled during the year. Committed and caring volunteers provide excellent care for the youngsters when needed. The nursery is located on the main floor, down the hall from the Sanctuary and to your left.  It is inside the first hallway door, on your right.  It was newly remodeled, and painted by one of our church members and enjoys frequent use by infants and toddlers.

JUNIOR CHURCH

A Junior Church program has been developed for youngsters in the kindergarten through second grade. Following the Children's Sermon during the 10:30 worship service, the youngsters are dismissed for the Junior Church downstairs. Volunteer Junior Church leaders, guide the children in learning about a wide variety of topics regarding living the Christian life as well as learning the essentials and meaning of Christian worship. A good time is had by all the children and often the sound of their music or games can be heard during a silent time upstairs in the sanctuary!

MISSIONARY SUPPORT

Park Avenue United Methodists are active in the support of Christian Mission locally and world wide. In addition to financial support for many local projects, we support four UMC missionaries through Advance Special giving. We also support the Methodist church around the world by meeting Conference ministry and benevolent goals. Funds are raised through donations, yard and bake sales, Craft Fair, musical events, etc.
Currently we help to support: Brenda Connelly in Alabama ; Gail and Steve Quigg in Zaire; and Mary Wood, Red Bird Conference, Kentucky

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

The United Methodist Women meet at 1:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month for a program on timely subjects and on the work of Christian Mission worldwide. Our United Methodist Women at Park Avenue endeavor to fulfill the traditional role of being one of the most vital and moving forces behind the work of Christian Missions. Our ladies participate in District and Conference United Methodist Women's work and projects. All of the women of the church are invited to be a part of this fine organization, and we encourage all to participate in and support the ministry these women so ably provide through their tireless efforts.

MUSIC

Park Avenue has a fine musical program throughout the year. The Sanctuary Choir is a group of volunteer adults with 10 - 15 participants. They rehearse at 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays from September through June and share an anthem and lead the music of the 10:30 worship service. They also may perform several special works of music, cantatas or theme services. New singers are always welcome, just show up on a Wednesday during the school year!

The Handbell Choir usually consists of 6-12 ringers, and rehearses from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mondays during the school year. The Handbells assist in the presentation of the Gospel, usually monthly, throughout the year. The bell choir is currently searching for a director (volunteer position). APPLICANTS please contact Former Bell Director, Ann Barnes

The "Chimers," a hand-chime choir of 8 - 13 children, is currently on hiatus, while a new volunteer director is sought. They still play for occasional Christmas services or Vacation Bible School. Chimers met during the last school year from late October until Christmas only and accompanied the Children's Christmas play. Since this ministry is shared with the handbell director, applicants for director, or to play in the group, should contact Former Bell Director, Ann Barnes

The youth of Park Avenue worked for over a year and raised funds to form a Praise Band which they named
7th Day. They shared in the 8:15 and 10:30 worship services in 2004 and 2005. Due to departures for college, and work schedules, the band is in hiatus beginning in 2006 pending volunteers to become singers or instrumentalists. If you are interested, or for further information, contact the Youth Director.

Our choir director and organist, Mrs. Darlene Clippinger, serves throughout the year. We invite all persons with musical gifts to participate in this vital part of our overall church program of worship and fellowship. No experience required! Contact church office for information.

BIBLE STUDY

The pastor and lay persons lead various weekly Bible studies from September until mid-May.  We study one of the books of the Bible or a specific topic of interest. The studies are informal, class participation is encouraged, and are open to everyone. Disciple Bible Studies, may be held from September through May when there is a demand; ask the Pastor for more information. The other Bible Studies occur throughout the year, usually on Tues evenings at 7:00 p.m.  Public is welcome. Details are on the full calendar (link to the left).

UNITED METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP (UMYF)

The Youth Fellowship meets each Sunday evening from September through May and as announced throughout the summer months. Anyone is welcome to come, just drop in and find the noisiest room! During the school year they meet from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. This group of young people is led by the Pastor. All young people are welcome, church-goers or not. Their weekly meetings consist of a brief period of worship, caring and sharing of their concerns, and life application topics chosen by the membership themselves, often led by the members, and discussion on applying the Bible principles to their lives. Of course, almost all meetings are accompanied by lots of music, fun, and always food!
This group participates in, or organizes, several events throughout the church year including a Valentine’s dinner/dance, a booth at the Christmas Fair, cookie-making for a local High School choral concert, the worship service on Youth Sunday, and several fund raisers for missions. They often plan a missions work-camp trip during the summer after enough funds have been raised. They learn a lot, and have lots of fun eating pizza, cookies, ice cream, skiing, white-water rafting, playing paintball and taking fun trips. They have a room of their own on our lower floor complete with soda machine and decorated with graphics and artwork of their own making. The Lord is working through these young people.

FAMILY FELLOWSHIP

Periodically throughout the year, Park Avenue families and friends meet for a covered dish supper or a prepared meal and program. These events are announced and provide time for our families to gather as a church family, for fellowship and sharing. Several traditional events include Mother-Daughter banquet, Anniversary Dinner, Valentines Banquet, Easter Breakfast, June Church picnic and monthly Fellowship Hours after 10:30 service the first Sunday of every month, Sept. - May. Other special events scheduled throughout each year include the Christmas Fair (fund-raiser) second Saturday in November, Easter Egg hunt, occasional Yard Sale, annual Church Picnic (usually the 3rd weekend of June), and the Annual Church Birthday Party with cake, ice cream and entertainment for all.

MEN'S SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL TEAM

Our church fields a team of 11-13 players for the local Church League every April-July. Games are played on Tuesdays at 6:45 at various fields around the Franklin County, PA area.  More willing players are always welcome; call the church office for contact information.

MIXED BOWLING TEAM

Our church also has a bowling team of 5 kegglers and a few subs who meet weekly during the school year. In 2005-2006 the team won the National Division Inter-Church League championship! WAY TO GO!!!  Team members are: Don and Brian C., Brooke B, Doug B. and others.

CRAFTERS

Here are some of these wonderful ladies working on crafts for our annual Christmas Fair. The Craft Workers meets every month to work on various handcraft projects. They have made over 500 sleeping bags for the homeless in Chambersburg. This ambitious group of up to 15 ladies makes a handmade quilt for every baby born to our church congregation and knitted or crocheted prayer shawls for our elderly, shut-ins, or others in need of the warmth of comforting arms. They also make hundreds of Christmas decorations to sell at the Christmas Fair, held the second Saturday of November, which benefits our church-supported missionaries or a building project.

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY PROJECT

15 years and counting….

Park Ave sponsors a 2 mile stretch of PA State Route 997, along the north side of Letterkenny Army Depot from foot of Air Hill to the intersection of 997 and State Rte. 11N. A group of 5-10 volunteers meets 2 times a year to have breakfast at 8:00 at a local restaurant, visit, pick up trash, visit, and share stories! We do have fun, and it is a lot of work, but with willing volunteers it is done in about 1-2 hours. Our next pickup will be scheduled in the fall of 2008.  Contact Webservant at link below for exact date, or watch this space. The 8:00 breakfast at Greenvillage Restaurant is open to all.  SEE YOU THERE!

COMMUNITY COMMITMENTS

UMC CLUSTER EVENTS

Park Avenue participates with First United Methodist and St. Paul United Methodist in Chambersburg holding UMC Cluster events such as Lenten and Thanksgiving services, vespers in the summer, and multi-cultural or musical events which are advertised throughout the area.

CHURCH APARTMENTS AND PROPERTY

Making the best use of the church property, part of our building also houses several rental apartments, often occupied by college students at Wilson College, across the street from the church. The building is also used as a voting site for the First Ward in the Borough of Chambersburg. The adult Sunday School auditorium is used for many events throughout the year including Scouts, CAKE45, voting, and various private weddings, birthdays and dinner parties, etc.
