FREE COMMUNITY DINNER
We need a church or church group to provide, serve and clean up a simple meal to feed 80-100 on the 4 th Wednesday of every month. The other 3 Wednesdays are covered. This meal feeds our After School Program kids so they can stay for Wednesday Night Bible School , and some local homeless, poor, elderly, and some kids parents. Contact Rose Crumpler (853-5818) or the church office (587-2996).
AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM
This is a Virginia Conference Healing the Hurts program. 30 – 40 at risk children from nearby apartment complexes attend daily.
Donations of school supplies (wide ruled only – elementary age), healthy snacks, games, recreation equipment or money to purchase same.
Volunteer homework tutors and/or recreation helpers 3:30 to 6:00 pm every school day.
Contact the Director Debbie Winn (587-0704 –H), the church office (587-2996), or pastor Bruce (589-8513).
The Wesley Memorial after school program for at-risk children is partially funded by a Healing the Hurts Conference grant. We are very grateful for all gifts you have given. We continue to be in need of financial support (primarily), and snacks and school supplies. Would your Men's and Women's units or mission areas consider adopting our ministry? The free Wednesday Community Dinner is not presently supported the 4th Wednesdays, March through November. This is an excellent opportunity to do hands on missions work for Youth groups or other groups within your church. Call Joann McClung in the office 9-2 (587-2996) for further details
United Methodist historical materials
Virginia Wesleyan College is taking initial steps to provide a special library section for the United Methodist historical materials. Due to space limitations, donated materials being considered for acceptance are primarily out-of-print monographs or periodicals, or rare archival materials that may provide a valuable permanent resource for serious study of United Methodist history, theology, and life. Persons having such materials to donate may contact the Director, Hofheimer Library by email at library@vwc.edu or by surface mail at 1584 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502-5599. Please provide the following information: title and author of volume, date of publication, general condition of the material, and other pertinent descriptive data. Contact information: Jan S. Volunteers Needed for Soup Kitchens!
Do you have a group of 6, who would like to be in mission in the heart of Norfolk on an upcoming Thursday evening? Park Place UMC's Soup Kitchen would love to have you come, bring food, and serve soup and sandwiches to c. 90 men, women, and children from 6:30 until 7:30 PM!
Your group will need to arrive c. 5:30 PM, with 4-6 gallons of soup (your choice), c. 110-125 sandwiches (prebagged and tagged as to content, with some vegetarian), and a dessert (fruit, cookies, brownies, etc). You'll be asked to set up the serving area, prepare two containers of lemonade/tea/Tang and water, and serve those who come in after the 6:00 PM Chapel Service. (If you'd like to lead that time for c. 45-50, let us know, and we'll make arrangements). At 7:30, we clean up, and put things back in order.
It's an extraordinary way to be in mission to some of the neediest folk in urban Norfolk. Most of those whom we see are "working poor," and we simply help them stretch their income by a meal or two, plus a bag of food from the SE VA FoodBank.
Also, if you have spare blankets (not necessarily new, but clean and service-able) or a winter coat (larger sizes are needed), or some extra socks, hats, or gloves, please let us know soon. The nights are cold, and many are sleeping in unheated rooms wearing all their clothes.
If God's calling you to share in this ministry among the "least, the last, and the lost," please give Park Place UMC a call (622-3363) to sign up for an upcoming Thursday night's ministry.
A number of UMC's have helped in this important work during the last year, and we are grateful for your interest, involvement, and service.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Grace and peace.
