The Senior Choir

On June 11, 1867 approximately two (2) years after the end of slavery, land was purchased and deeded to the trustees of the Colored Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first dwelling to be called Brooks Church was an old log building located directly beside the now Brooks Church Road. It is not known when this building was completed, but it is known that this meeting house served as both church and school. The labor and materials for this building was provided by the men of the church and community, but the frames, sashes and flooring was provided by The Freedmen's Bureau, an organization established by Congress on March 3, 1865 for the purpose of assisting black communities establishing schools and hospitals.

Sometime in the late 1800's, a new church was erected, just to the right of the current Church Hall. Due to various circumstances, the building was not completed until 1889. The building served the church and community well until the appointment Rev. F. D. Myers to the Nottingham charge in the 1930's. Upon accepting this appointment Rev. Myers was told that one of his duties would be to build a new sanctuary. Construction of the new sanctuary began in 1938 and was completed and dedicated, debt free in September, 1939.

In 1900, land was purchased along with an old log building which was used for St. Mary's Church in Croom until another building could be built. Initially, St. Mary's Church had been a part of the Marlboro Charge and Brooks Church had been yoked with the Woodville Charge. After frustration from members of Brooks Church because they could only have a minister only one (1) Sunday each month, the Methodist Episcopal Conference formed the Nottingham Charge. Although the composition of the charge changed from time to time, in 1905 both churches reunited to form one charge under the Nottingham Charge.

In 1968, Brooks Church and St. Mary's Church merged and became Myers United Methodist Church. Nottingham-Myers United Methodist Church is an outgrowth of the "Old Salem" meeting house which sat on the banks of the Patuxent River at Nottingham, the Old Brooks Methodist Church and the former St. Mary's Methodist Church of Croom.

In summary, Nottingham-Myers United Methodist Church under the leadership of dynamic Pastors and spirit-filled laity, have prospered, grown, and faithfully served it's community. We have lived out our moto as "A Family Centered Church with a Christ Centered Message" throughout one hundred and thirty one years. Now we prepare to face the challenges of the twenty-first century as faithfully as our ancestors.
