Resources for Adult Education

In addition to the study materials listed below, you may want to invite some speakers to address some environmental justice topics. If you're in Central New York, there are speakers available on a variety of topics.

Discussion Group Materials

The Cry of Creation: A Call for Climate Justice published by Earth Ministry (Oct. 2003) - an interfaith study guide on global warming. It includes:

A sermon/reflection connecting justice, theology, and spirituality with climate change.
A quick overview of the scientific consensus on global warming.
A spectrum of interfaith voices addressing the theological and ethical dimensions of this crisis.
A spectrum of action steps people of faith can take, and policies we might support – both as individuals and as congregations.
A bibliography highlighting books, articles, videos, and websites

Simpler Living, Compassionate Life: A Christian Perspective
This is an excellent set of essays, complete with a study guide at the end! A great resource for small group discussion.
"Simpler Living, Compassionate Life gathers many voices into one insistent, yet gentle call: for the sake of all we hold sacred North Americans must change the way we live.  Beyond stridency and fear these voices remind us that there is a  spaciousness to choosing ‘less’ that may bring ‘more’ real wealth into our lives.  The study curriculum is excellent, especially for people of faith.”
Jim Wallis; Editor-in-Chief of Sojourners Magazine
Food and Faith: Justice, Joy and Daily Bread
This book of readings includes a study guide at the end for use with small groups
"Highly recommended! Thought provoking and inspiring, this book will help many see and express the connections between their faith, their food choices, and caring for God's people and God's creation."
~ David Beckmann, President, Bread for the World"
Hope for the Earth: A Handbook for Christian Environmental Groups by Sharon Delgado. Each of the ten study sessions has sections on Building a Spiritual Foundation, Educating Ourselves as a Group, and Planning for Action. This is suitable for any Christian group, but it's especially interesting for Methodists since each Spiritual Foundation section is based on Wesley's Quadrilateral using scripture, tradition, reason, and experience.
Climbing the Sycamore Tree: A Study of Choice and Simplicity
Using the story of Zacchaeus, author Ann Hagmann examines economic decision making in light of what Jesus taught. This six-week study for small groups or individuals challenges readers to understand culturally acceptable but less-than-Christian behaviors and offers alternative choices.

The National Council of Churches' Web of Creation has some materials that are useful for discussion groups:

Your Health and the Environment: Two One-Hour Adult Study Sessions
It's God's World: Christians, the Environment, and Climate Change

The National Council of Churches publishes study materials called God's Earth, Our Home. There are twelve sessions, but the materials suggest selections for shorter time periods. The materials give a good overview of the issues and provoke interesting discussions.
