UMH # 504 Scripture Meditation
1 Corinthians 1:18-25 For the preaching of the cross is to
them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the
power of God. For it is written,
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the
understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the
scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made
foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the
wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by
the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the
Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we
preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto
the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews
and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because
the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is
stronger than men.
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
On a hill far away stood
an old rugged cross, O that old rugged cross,
so despised by the world, In that old rugged cross,
stained with blood so divine, To the old rugged cross I
will ever be true; lyrics and music George Bennard 1913
As a young man, George Bennard wanted to be a career evangelist. When his father died, he had to stay home and care for his mother and sisters. He later married and worked for the Salvation Army and then became an evangelist. Bennard spent his last years in Reed City, Michigan, where the Chamber of Commerce erected a cross near his home. The Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum in Reed City commemorates his work. |
