Counselors are ministers or religious professionals with graduate clinical and academic training in both theology and psychology. They are certified by national organizations including the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Four counseling professionals work at the Center. Dr. Gary Augustin is the Executive Director. Staff counselors include Rev. Bryan Austill, Ph.D; Rev. Tom Walter, D. Min; and Sister Claudia, M.A.
Services provided include counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups; educational classes and workshops for churches, temples, and the community; referral services, testing and evaluation with psychiatric and psychological consultation; supervision and consultation in pastoral counseling and marriage and family therapy; and consultation for clergy and congregations.
The Center was opened in 1989; and has since done over 17,000 hours of counseling for people from over 13 denominations and faith groups, 14 different ethnic groups, over half of whom were referred by clergy or members of congregations.
Fees for counseling are set by an income-based scale to make services affordable for all. The fees are supplemented by the generous support of individuals, congregations, denominations, and businesses.
Offices are located in Honolulu, Kailua, Wahiawa, and Hilo.
Contact Dr. Gary Augustin or a member of the staff at the Center (808) 545-2740, for counseling, for possible participation as a professional, or to make financial contributions to the Center. Other contact information: fax (808) 545-2852, email samcenter@hawaii.rr.com.
