FUMC-IHS Dinner Project
September 1-30: Give Aloha donation # 78289
(see below for details)

Dinner for 350 at IHS Inspiration: Luke 14: 12-14
Next dinner for IHS: September 7st

Once every two months, about half a dozen volunteers cooperate with the Institute for Human Services (IHS) to make and serve a dinner for about 350 poor and homeless men, women, and children on O'ahu. (Yes, one of the biggest tourist destinations in the USA has about 3,000 homeless people.)

This project is supported financially by mini-grants from our California-Pacific Conference of the UMC and by private donations. Much of the food we prepare and serve is obtained from our church's Foodbank, which in turn is supported largely by grants-in-aid from the Hawaii Foodbank. However, meat (usually hamburger for spaghetti dinners) and salad greens often have to be purhased from nearby grocery stores. Cal-Pac was as generous as it could be, giving $310 to the project this year, to which was added a small sum from last year's Christmas donations. The IHS estimates each dinner costs about $350, and we are committed to making six dinners a year. Thanks to being able to get most of the ingredients from the Foodbank, that cost was cut to about a third per dinner, but now we could really use a little help.

Give Aloha    During September 1-30, you will probably (like last year) be able to donate to our IHS dinner program when you shop at Foodland or Sack'N'Save while using your Maika'i Card. Just tell the checkout clerk you want to donate to the First United Methodist Church IHS Dinner Program and give them this account number: 78289. You can donate with a check, cash or acceptable credit card. You will see the donation recorded on your receipt. Foodland and the Western Union Foundation this year will distribute $300,000 to all agencies participating in their Give Aloha campaign; the distribution will be proportionate to how much each agency receives in donations. For more information, see Foodland's Give Aloha information page. Our program is only one of hundreds to which you may donate, by the way. Foodland will have lists of them all!

Interested in volunteering or supporting this effort in other ways? We can use help once every two months to prepare salads, cook, shop, deliver, set up, serve, and/or clean up. Call Ashley Jung at (808) 383-7282 or email her at ajung21@hotmail.com. In case you are interested in this IHS volunteer dinner program for your church or organization, see IHS's donation opportunity pages.
