First meal of "Saturday's Bread" - Served 54 Original volunteer groups: Church of All Nations, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Emmanuel Gospel Center-Boston, Parish of the Epiphany-Winchester, Holy Cross Cathedral-Boston, The Oblate Community-Boston, Old South Church, St. John the Evangelist- Hingham, St. Stephen's-Boston, Society of St. Margaret, South End Neighborhood Group, Trinity Church, Union United Methodist-Boston

 

DECEMBER 1983

First contribution from Walk for Hunger - $3,000.00

 

1984

MIT Hunger Action Group became first college/university group to work Saturday's Bread (still working).

 

MARCH 1985

Temple Israel, first Jewish organization to work Sunday's Bread

 

MARCH 1985

"The Ebenezer Four": Miriam Young, Bertha Brown, Barbara Roach, and Elizabeth Woodly began a 10-year record of service for Saturday's/Sunday's Bread (still working).

 

MARCH 17. 1985

At our first "Sunday's Bread" program, "Saturday's Bread" expanded to "Saturday's/Sunday's Bread." Served 111

 

AUGUST 1985

Mort Backer became the corporate and philanthropic fundraiser. In September 1990, he was succeeded by Lael (Plunkett) Murphy.

 

JUNE 1986

Old South Church paid for replacement of electric range in kitchen($2,500.00).

Front-page coverage with pictures in The Jewish Advocate

Channel 7 TV featured Saturday's/Sunday's Bread.

 

MARCH 1991

Boston Chicken franchise, 725 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, made its first biweekly donation of chicken (still contributing).

Special award from Walk for Hunger for "Outstanding Service Feeding the Hungry"

 

JUNE 1992

150,000th guest served

 

SEPTEMBER 1996

Rev. Karen Bryant, pastor of Church of All Nations, elected chairperson of Saturday's/Sunday's Bread.

 

DECEMBER 1996

Saturday's/Sunday's Bread goes online with a site on the World Wide Web

The program is now administered by 48 organizations of 1,000 volunteers. There are no paid employees or staff. This is an interfaith, interdenominational, interracial, human activity of people concerned about the hungry in the Boston area.
