Saturday's/Sunday's Bread is a soup kitchen at "The Church of All Nations," located at 333 Tremont Street in Downtown Boston. Saturday's Bread started serving March 12, 1983. Sunday's Bread started March 17, 1985. Meals are served every Saturday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. and every Sunday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The meals are free and are served in a dining room setting - eight guests to a table. The meals are nutritious and include fruit juice, fresh garden salad, the main course, dessert, coffee, and, of course, bread. There are no age or sex restrictions.

The preparation and serving are done by approximately 1,000 volunteers from 48 organizations on a scheduled rotating basis (about once every six weeks). There are no paid employees or staff. This is an interfaith, interdenominational, interracial, human activity of people concerned about the hungry in the Boston area. Each organization furnishes a team of five volunteers per schedule. Three teams are scheduled for each Saturday and four for each Sunday. All meals are prepared on site the day of serving. A clergy person is scheduled on a rotating basis for our "prayer circle" and for grace before meals. The presence of the clergy mininizes potential disturbances between/among guests.

As indicated above, those who come to Saturday's/Sunday's Bread are our guests and are so treated by all volunteers.

The organizations that operate the program are from churches, synagogues, temples, colleges, universities, fraternal organizations, businesses, etc. Doctrinal discussions are not allowed.

Saturday's/Sunday's Bread does not permit individual volunteers to work in the program - one must be from a participating group or may establish his/her own group to join Saturday's/Sunday's Bread. Participants must be age 18 or older.

Requirements for participation:

  1. Furnish five volunteers per schedule. Saturday volunteers report at 10:00 a.m. for a four-hour duty to 2:00 p.m. Sunday volunteers report at 1:00 p.m. for a four-hour duty to 5:00 p.m.
  2. Send representative(s) to "steering committee" meeting (about four times a year). Meetings are at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, and a meal is served from 6:00-6:30 p.m. Meetings last about 1-1/2 hours.
