Cemetery Maintenance and contributions
Memorial United Methodist Church is responsible for cemeteries located at the sites of the four churches, Chapel, Micah, Mt. Pleasant, and Salem, which were combined to form Memorial. The church established a Cemetery Committee in 1995. The two primary functions of the committee are to provide perpetual care for the cemeteries and to set policy regarding burials there.
Many of the descendants of people buried at these cemeteries no longer reside in Charles City nor maintain membership at Memorial United Methodist Church. Through the generosity of some current and former members a small fund has been established to assist in caring for these cemeteries. Every year the basic functions of grass cutting and leaf removal are required. During years such as 1998 and 1999 major additional work has been required to remove debris and make repairs from ice storms and hurricanes. Our cemeteries also need additional work to preserve the monuments and repair or replace fences.
The current funds available to maintain these cemeteries are insufficient to cover the work required. We all feel a great responsibility as members of Memorial United Methodist Church or as descendants of those who are interred there. We are asking others, who have an interest through family ties or through interest in the preservation of these historic cemeteries to assist in this work. Any donation that you could make would be greatly appreciated.
Please make checks payable to “Memorial United Methodist Church.” On the face of your check, please designate for which cemetery the funds are to be used. Send your contribution to:
